Although initially intended as a close-support artillery piece, the fact that the Semovente carried a bigger gun than the tanks it supported led to its use as a tank-destroyer, and then as a tank in its own right. By the time of the Tunisian fighting, the Semovente made up approximately half of the Italian armoured force in theatre, giving them significantly greater punch than in earlier battles in the desert.
