Water vapor will sublimate from the ice on warmer summer days, and soon fall back again as snow. This new environment is perfect for snow algae! Inside the ice and snow, they are protected from cold, dryness, and radiation, while creating their own micro-environment using heat from cellular reactions and increased light absorption when making the ice darker.
