Unvention is a competitive roll ‘n write game for 2-7 players, in which players compete in a three day invention competition to become the most renowned inventor of the globe. During the game, players will roll dice, fill in their journals, gather parts, and build mechanisms. These mechanisms will further be combined to build complex inventions.

At the end of each day of an Unvention competition, players present their inventions and score points based on how elaborate they are. Inventions are made up of mechanisms that players have made in their electrical, magnetic, hydraulic, or mechanical workshops. These mechanisms are polyomino shapes that players make themselves.

Each round 5d6 is rolled and separated into two groups of dice; equals and unequals. Player then simultaneously choose which group of dice they want to use for journaling, and which group they want to get new parts. Journaling, which is a mini game of Sudoku, is a key part of each player's turn. Players unlock wrenches by completing rows and columns of their journals, which is needed to make the polyomino shaped mechanisms.

The first day of the competition is triggered by the first player that completely fills in their first journal, where players must choose to either present their inventions, or wait for the next day. The sooner an invention is presented, the more points it scores. Second and third day are triggered by players in a similar fashion, and at the end of the third day, the player with the most victory points is declared the winner of the competition.

Unvention comes with two competitions, Novice and Innovator. The Novice competition is the most streamlined, and a great way of learning the game. Upon repeat plays, for those who feel comfortable with the base game system and seek a bit of variety and meaningful choices, it is recommended that players try the Innovator competition.
