This Magic: The Gathering expansion returns to the world of Theros to continue the story of Elspeth Tirel. When we last saw Elspeth, she had been struck down with her own weapon by Heliod, God of the Sun. Now, we rejoin her in the Underworld as she plots an escape back to the world of the living, covertly aided by Erebos, God of the Dead, who has long held a grudge against Heliod and is now weakening the barrier between life and death just to spite him. Of course, Elspeth isn't the only one to take advantage—other denizens of the Underworld are seizing the opportunity to plan escapes of their own. As the Titans' chains weaken, their guardian, Klothys, God of Fate, returns from her exile and is very miffed at all the trouble that's been stirred up while she was away. Meanwhile, the nightmare mage Ashiok has dark designs of their own...
Theros Beyond Death features the return of the Devotion mechanic from Theros and the Constellation mechanic from Journey into Nyx, and introduces a new mechanic, Escape, that allows spells to be cast from the graveyard. The set contains 254 cards (5 basic lands, 101 commons, 80 uncommons, 53 rares, and 15 mythic rares), and is sold in draft boosters, collector boosters, theme boosters, and bundles. Two preconstructed planeswalker decks, an Elspeth deck and an Ashiok deck, were released alongside the main set as well.
