During the 1980s, the Italian Air Force was one of the most capable in NATO. Flying the Panavia Tornado IDS, as well as the A-11 Ghibli and older aircraft such as the G. 91, the Italian Air Force found itself split between helping the Greeks on the Mediterranean front and NATO in Germany.
