Ultimus Romanorum is a strategic game that depicts the end of the Western Roman Empire from the great invasion 405 AD to its Fall in 476AD.
One players plays the 2 Roman Empires (Eastern (Byzantium) and Western). The other one plays the enemies of the Rome (Barbarians and usurpers).
During the course of the game those roles can be inverted (in phase F of each turn).
Historical leaders (Romans and Barbarians) come into play at specific times but die at variable times.
The goal of the game is to score more victory points (PV) than your opponent.
Turns alternate between the players, based on initiative, they can use stratagems (uprising, usurping...).
Sequence of play:
A- stratagems (random selection)
B- initiative
C- Geo-strategy (use of stratagems)
D- Administration
E- Moves and Battles
F- Outcome of the campaign
This is the 3rd in the designer's series on the Roman Empire, published in Vae Victis 74 (May 2007), Ultimus Romanorum is similar to his previous games Imperator and Semper Victor.
Each game turn = 1 year
Each strenght point (PF) = ~1000 men
1d6 and 1d10 are required
