The War in the East focuses on the actions that took place in the Hawkes Bay Province that was looking at an attack on the Napier Town in September to October 1866.

Donald McLean the Hawkes Bay Superintendent, deemed that an attack from Hauhau forces under Pai Marie war priest Panapa, order commander of the Military district force Lt-Colonel George Whitmore to assemble the milita and volunteers to meet this threat.
