bot·net - "A network of private computers infected with malicious software and controlled as a group without the owners' knowledge."
In botNET, Hackers compete for notoriety and power by building the largest and most powerful network of computers. Mastering botNET requires careful planning, strategy, and a touch of game theory.
The game is broken into five actions where Hackers:
Scan the Internet (draw deck) to download new Nodes (cards),
Connect the nodes to the network on the table
Mine encryption keys that can unlock new Nodes
Hack nodes by moving an Avatar to the node and using the keys.
Recruit ‘whitehat’ or ‘blackhat’ hackers to your side.
Each Node has a Type which determines what it does as well as a security level that shows how hard it is to hack and where in the network it is allowed to go.
Each node type is associated with a shape:
Miners (Triangle) - Computers that crunch numbers to generate encryption keys.
Storage (Square) - Databases that store nodes or encryption keys.
Applications (Circle) - Programs that enhance specific actions.
Botnets (Hexagon)- Hackers earn street cred by connecting new nodes to these networks.
The color of a Node determines its Security Level:
Home (Blue) nodes are small systems owned by individuals.
Commercial (Green) nodes belong to small and medium businesses.
Cloud (Orange) nodes are located in the data centers of giant multinational corporations.
Government (Red) nodes belong to a national Government and are very difficult to hack.
Cards in the network must respect the security levels. For instance, Home nodes may never be directly connected to Cloud or Government Nodes without a Commercial Node in between.
A hidden war is being waged between two hacker groups: the Freedom Foundation, whose membership includes altruistic Whitehat hackers, and the Cracker Coalition, which is made up of ruthless Blackhat Hackers.
Street credit, or “Cred” is a crucial currency in the Hacker world. In botNET it is represented by White or Black glass tokens that indicate if the Cred is ‘Whitehat’ or ‘Blackhat’. Connecting nodes to Botnets earn Cred from one of the two hacker groups. One earned, Cred can be used to the Hackers advantage by acquiring contacts and issuing exploits.
Contacts are shadowy individuals that will assist you but may switch allegiances at the drop of a hat. Contacts have secret knowledge that can make hacks easier and will pay you if you can gain control over the Nodes they desire. Unscrupulous rivals may turn informant and report Contacts to the police. Who will keep their mouth shut and who will rat?
