There is an isle off the coast of Kanis, known in the ash-tongue as Gur-Aleph, or The Mouth of the Fallen Flame. Once it bore groves of silver fig and temples carved with sunrise upon their lintels—but now, it is a cinder-stained husk, where nothing blooms and no bird dares call. Yet a fire has risen again. They speak in hushed curses of a sorcerer whose bones were strung across seven gallows and whose heart was entombed in salt. His name is Kharezum, and it was not forgotten, only buried—like a blade awaiting blood. The dead walk in his wake. Ships vanish in fog the color of old parchment.
