Makruk (Thai: หมากรุก) (or Thai chess) is a board game descended from the 6th century Indian game of Chaturanga or a close relative thereof, and therefore related to chess. It is regarded as the most similar living game to this common ancestor of all chess variants. The name is pronounced /màkrúk/, with a tone pattern of low-high. Makruk is popular in Thailand and Cambodia. In these countries the game is more popular than chess. There are around two million Thais who can play Makruk, of which about 5000 also play chess. The information from www.wikipedia.org Makruk opening setup is similar to international Chess, except that the pawns start on the third rank and the King of each side is always on the left of the Queen. The queen moves just one square diagonally (like the queen in medieval chess), and the bishop moves one square in any diagonal direction or straight ahead.
