Greed is played with a standard 52-card deck divided into greed cards (all the courts) and number cards (all others). Each player gets an equal number of greed cards and the number cards are dealt out (with one player getting an extra card in the three-player game).
Players take turns to play one card, which can either go in front of them or in the middle of the table, in either case covering any card previously there. Aces can be played to other players' piles but cannot cover greed cards.
Greed cards can only be played to own's one pile, and in this case the player scores the total of the cards showing on the table (i.e., on top of any of the four or five piles) before placing it. Greed cards and aces are worth zero; all other cards are worth their face value, but positive if black and negative if red. Any other player with a greed card on top of their pile scores the same amount as the active player.
After a player has played a greed card they must play on their own pile next turn to cover it.
