Le Monde à Vol d'Oiseau (1895)

"The game itself is remarkably simple. As many as six people can play and learn at the same time. Players select a part of the world represented on one of six printed boards: Europe, North and Central America, South America, Asia, Africa and Oceania, which represents Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea. Each player then attempts to collect all 20 playing cards related to his or her respective corner of the world by correctly answering questions about various towns, mountains and rivers. Oceania’s 20 chromolithographic cards, for example, include questions and illustrations about cities such as Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, as well as various individuals and fauna such as Captain James Cook, kangaroos, echidnas, cassowaries and the Aborigines of Papua, New Guinea. Cards from other continents include illustrations such as a herring fishery off the coast of Norway, the Suez Canal, the construction of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair exhibition and a portrait of Christopher Columbus. The game cards, boards and instructions are written in French, allowing Francophiles the opportunity to test their language skills.
