After the Carthaginian mercenaries rose up slew their Carthaginian commanders they offered to surrender the island to Rome. In a violation of the treaty signed at the end of the First Punic War the Senate annexed the island, and when Carthage complained Rome threatened war and increased Carthage's indemnity.
During the Second Punic war both Rome and Carthage sent armies to the island, and these forces met outside of Caralis.
