The failure of the Me210 program left the aging Me110 filling the gap until a new heavy fighter could be designed. The more powerful Me410 "Hornet" was rushed into production by 1943, first operating as a night bomber and later as a bomber-destroyer with some success. The Me410 had a number of innovative design features including remotely controlled rear-facing guns and a "pallet system" for reconfiguring the aircraft as a bomber, a fighter, or a photo recon aircraft.
