The board depicts a football field. It has a sliding marker for the ball, and another for the ten yards. Also included on the board are charts that show outcomes based on the throw of three dice. The offensive player calls a play, rolls the dice, and then refers to the chart for the outcome. In some cases there is another dice roll: if a pass is complete, another roll shows the yardage gained. If the play is a punt, the other player rolls the dice to see how many yards back they run, and so on. The outcomes were designed to be statistically similar to the games of the time.
